The Galápagos Penguin (Spheniscus mendiculus) is the only penguin with a range that extends north of the equator. It lives in the cool waters derived from the Humboldt Current as well as equatorial and island effect upweling. The Galápagos penguin is a banded penguin with relatives living on the coasts of Africa and mainland South America.
